The streets of Johannesburg came alive on 12 September as Jaecoo unveiled its latest compact SUV, the Jaecoo J5, at the iconic Fox Junction in the heart of the CBD.

Jaecoo entered the South African market in April 2024 with the launch of the J7, and since then, the brand has enjoyed a phenomenal sales start, driven largely by strong sentiment from private buyers.

Lungelo Zwane, marketing specialist said this launch was far more than just a new set of wheels, it marked a bold repositioning of the Jaecoo brand in South Africa. “While our parts may be Chinese, our heart is proudly South African. Jaecoo J5 captures essence of a brand refresh that aims to connect deeply with local motorists.

Blending affordability with luxury, the J5 arrives as Jaecoo’s most accessible SUV yet, promising sophistication, advanced features, and a distinctly South African spirit that drivers can embrace,” said Zwane.

Shannon Gahagan, national brand and marketing manager said when they started out, they were selling just 100 cars. “Today, we are selling over 1,200, a remarkable growth. Thank you for embracing more than just Jaecco and for embracing what it brings to South Africa. This was made possible through the teamwork of our multicultural South African family,” said Gahagan.

The newly launched Jaecoo J5 is more than just a car, it is a blend of cutting-edge features, stylish design, and thoughtful details that set it apart. Product Manager Lindokuhle Sibanjoni summed it up perfectly.

He said safety is very important and Jaecoo J5 ensures that you are always protected. “It is equipped with advanced driver-assist systems, including blind spot monitoring and emergency braking. Jaecoo J5 puts your safety first. It also offers voice command functionality, giving you hands-free control on the go,” he explained.

Sibanjoni also said for comfort and style, the vehicle introduces customizable ambient lighting with a variety of colour combinations to match your mood. “It also features noise control settings, allowing you to easily mute or unmute voices as you prefer.

And for music lovers, the exclusive music Cherokee mode creates an immersive audio experience that makes every journey enjoyable. The family of Jaecoo continues to grow, bringing safety, innovation, and lifestyle together in one remarkable drive,” said Sibanjoni.

Thato Dladla, CEO for Tshebedisano Burial Society and Funerals welcomed the Jaecoo J5 while emphasising that the Jaecoo J7 represents a forward-looking, modern, and culturally aligned choice for their future fleet. “It’s elegance and performance resonate with our mission to provide families with services that are both dignified and contemporary,” said Dladla whose presence was felt at the launch as she dressed according to the theme.

She further said she hopes to partner with Jaecoo so that they can set a new standard for how corporate, community, and service excellence intersect. “Together, Tshebedisano Burial Society and Funerals and Jaecoo can ensure that every farewell is dignified, modern, and meaningful,” said Dladla.

Jaecoo J5 is positioned below the Jaecoo J7. The J5 is powered by a 1.5-litre turbopetrol engine that comes in three derivatives (Vortex, Glacier, and Inferno) and offers premium design, technology, and features at a more accessible price point.

Jaecoo is a Chinese automotive brand launched in 2023 by Chery. Specializing in SUVs built for global markets, the brand combines refined design with strong off-road performance.

The name merges the German word “Jäger” (hunter) with “cool,” capturing its “hunter-cool” identity for urban off-roaders. Its flagship models include the J7 and the more accessible J5, now being rolled out in key markets such as South Africa and the UK hence J5 was launched recently in South Africa.
