Condom Drive Champions: Safer Sex at the University of Mpumalanga

Every Thursday at the University of Mpumalanga (UMP), a spirited group of Peer Educators takes to the campus with a mission: to put sexual health front and centre. Known as the Thursday Condom Drive, this student-led initiative is reshaping conversations around sex, safety, and responsibility—one condom at a time.

Far from a simple distribution campaign, the Condom Drive is a dynamic platform for open dialogue, where students engage each other on topics of sexual and reproductive health. Through peer-to-peer interaction, the initiative fosters a culture of awareness and responsibility, helping to curb the spread of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and reduce unplanned pregnancies.

“At its core, this drive is about empowerment, We’re not just handing out condoms—we’re starting important conversations and helping our peers make informed choices.”

Backed by University of Mpumalanga Campus Health, the initiative benefits from institutional support that ensures its sustainability and impact. Its collaboration with Higher Health and alignment with the national First Things First campaign places the Condom Drive within a broader strategy to promote youth health across South Africa’s higher education institutions.

The Thursday Condom Drive is not just a weekly event—it’s a movement. And at University of Mpumalanga, it’s proving that young people, when equipped and empowered, are the strongest advocates for their own health and futures
